OUR PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

In collaboration with our partners, Our organization has been at the forefront of empowering and enhancing the capacity and skills of Somali journalists over the past Six years. Media Women Network’s activities include various impactful media trainings, workshops, meetings and events, creating a lasting impact in the Somali media industry. Through our training programs, we have empowered both female and male journalists, increased the women’s representation in leadership positions and improved the quality of media content.

In addition to our training programs, we have played an active role in organizing various events to commemorate International Days and promote gender equality, the importance of women's roles, youth empowerment, and access to education. Through these events, MWN has actively contributed to raising awareness, engaging the public, and promoting dialogue on pressing issues that affect women, youth, and the broader community.

Women Representation in top media management positions

With the support of International Media Support (IMS) and FOJO Media Institute, over the past three years, the MWN organization has been dedicated to enhancing the knowl-edge, skills, morale, and pride of women in Somali journal-ism. A key focus has been on promoting women to senior management positions in media organizations, a milestone that has been achieved by only a limited number of women in the history of Somali media.
While there have been significant and measurable achievements resulting from training activities, it is import-ant to acknowledge that the situation still requires substan-tial effort, given the challenges arising from cultural, economic, social understanding, and the perspectives of media owners. These challenges cannot be attributed to women themselves. Below, you can explore the activities and efforts we have made in the past three years.

MWN IN COLLABORATION WITH UNSOM

The Media Women Network, in collaboration with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), has been at the forefront of empowering Somali journal-ists in the last three years. Through a series of impactful training programs, we have equipped 310 Somali journal-ists with essential skills and knowledge in areas critical to the development of the nation.
These inclusive trainings, supported by UNSOM, have focused on topics that are very important to journalists and society from different angles, such as women's access to justice and court reporting skills and ethics, climate change reporting and the role of journalists, and reporting on sexual violence and the subsequent handling of such cases in Somalia. These trainings were conducted in various regions, ensuring a wide reach and enabling journalists from diverse backgrounds to benefit from the programs.
